World gold is under sharp pressure in late September 2026. Spot prices have been trading around $4,150–$4,200 an ounce after another drop of more than 2% in a day, and well below the January peak.Fxstreet
Gold hit a record near $5,400–$5,600 in January. From that high, the market is down about 20–25%. Shops in Cambodia have followed the international move lower.Hangchengmeas
This is not buy-or-sell advice. Gold can fall further. Decide from your own cash needs and time horizon.
Why gold is falling
The slump is not because nobody wants gold. The main drivers are:
- a strong U.S. dollar
- higher U.S. Treasury yields
- bets that the Federal Reserve will stay tight
Gold pays no interest. When rates and the dollar rise, money often leaves gold for cash and bonds. Gold ETFs have seen outflows. Central banks are still buying, but that bid has not stopped short-term selling.Fxempire
What big banks see by year-end 2026
Forecasts do not agree. Many banks cut targets after the Fed stopped looking likely to ease this year.
A simple map:
Figures often cited:
- Goldman Sachs: about $4,650–$4,900 by year-end
- J.P. Morgan: Q4 target cut to about $4,500 (earlier calls were much higher)
- Bank of America: 2026 average near $4,360
- Deutsche Bank: warned gold could fall toward $3,800 if the Fed hikes again
No bank can guarantee the number. Targets move when the Fed moves.
Should you buy now?
Buying can make sense if:
- you hold gold for years, not weeks
- this is spare money, not rent or school fees
- you accept that the price can drop another 10%
- you buy in pieces, not all at once
A 20%+ fall from the peak is cheaper than January. “Cheaper than the top” is not the same as “the bottom.” If $4,200 breaks, some charts point to $4,000 or lower.
Should you sell now?
Selling can make sense if:
- you bought near the January high and cannot take more loss
- you need cash soon
- gold is too large a share of what you own
- a further drop would keep you awake
Panic-selling everything is how people miss a later rebound. Selling part and keeping part is often calmer.
A practical approach for the rest of 2026
- Do not trade one day’s shop talk. Gold moves with the dollar overnight.
- Split the decision. Buy or sell 20–30% at a time, not 100%.
- Check the local premia. Cambodian chi / tael prices include the exchange rate and the shop margin. They are not the same as the ounce quote.
- Jewelry is not investment bars. Crafting cost means you get less back when you sell.
- Do not borrow to buy the dip. If the dip continues, the loss doubles.
Bottom line
The drop is real.
Most large-bank year-end maps do not assume a return to the January record. The common range is roughly $4,300–$4,900 if the Fed stops tightening. Another hike still leaves room for a deeper fall.
Long-term holders: a pullback can be a chance to add slowly.
People who need cash soon: do not wait for the old high.
Short-term traders: this is a high-risk stretch.
Ask one question:
If gold falls another 10%, can you still sleep?
If not, do not buy a large amount in one day.
Note: Not investment advice. Prices change daily. Check local shops and a qualified adviser before you act.
