A Stranger Can Follow Your Location Through These 3 Features

A phone is convenient. It can also show where you are, without anyone stealing the device. If a feature is left on, or someone else is inside your account, your location can leak.

These three features are worth checking. This is for protecting yourself, not for tracking anyone else.

1. Live location sharing

WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, and Google Maps can send your live location to a person or a group. Sometimes you turn it on for one hour and forget. Sometimes the share is still running.

Check:

  • Inside the chat app, see who is receiving your location
  • Turn it off if you no longer need it
  • Do not share live location in a large group

2. Photos that hide a location

Many photos store the place they were taken. If you send or post the file without removing that data, the other person may see where it was shot.

Check:

  • Turn off camera location in settings
  • Before sending a photo of home or work, make sure the location is stripped
  • Do not post photos of an empty house while you are away

3. A “find my phone” account someone else can open

Find My, Find Hub, and Google or Apple accounts exist to recover a lost phone. If someone knows the password, or is still logged in, they can see the device location.

Check:

  • Change the password and turn on two-step verification
  • Review devices signed into the account, and sign out of strange ones
  • Do not let others log in on your phone

Do this today

Turn off location for apps that do not need it. Delete old location shares. Review the account. Those three steps cut more risk than worrying alone.

If you suspect someone is tracking you, tell a trusted person and contact the authorities. Do not use the same methods on anyone else.
