“Jailer 2” has opened with an estimated ₹125.25 crore worldwide on its first day, according to figures reported by The Week. The Rajinikanth film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, arrived in cinemas on Thursday, 15 October.
The total is well above the first “Jailer” (2023), which took ₹96.36 crore worldwide on its opening day, per the same report.
The numbers
The Week cites data from the industry tracker Sacnilk. It puts India net collections at ₹59.70 crore from 16,599 shows. Domestic gross was ₹70.25 crore, and overseas markets added ₹55 crore.
The original film made ₹48.35 crore net in India on its first day. The sequel’s opening is therefore a clear step up, in both domestic and global terms.
The Week says the film did better than its predecessor across all major box office categories it tracked. It also describes the result as the second-highest worldwide opening of Rajinikanth’s career. The report does not say which film holds the top spot.
Tamil and Telugu versions provided the largest share of the domestic earnings, according to The Week.
Early figures moved through the day
Trade numbers on opening days are estimates, and they change. ETV Bharat, reporting earlier on Thursday, cited Sacnilk’s live data at ₹45.40 crore net in India so far, with an India gross of ₹53.57 crore. That was a running total, not a final one. The later ₹59.70 crore net figure reported by The Week reflects a fuller count.
The same ETV Bharat report said worldwide advance bookings had passed ₹80 crore by the end of 14 October. In India, about 18 lakh tickets had been sold in advance for the opening day. The outlet also said the film was ahead of “GOAT,” “Vikram” and “Jana Nayagan” on opening-day tracking. It did not say which measure it used for that comparison, so the claim is best treated with caution.
A Hindi release with hurdles
The Week notes that disputes with multiplexes affected the Hindi release. It describes the hurdles as minor and says the film still posted a historic opening. The reports I found do not explain what the disputes were about or how much they cost the film in Hindi-language earnings.
Sun Pictures, the production company, shared promotional material on social media in the run-up to release, according to ETV Bharat.
What is still unknown
These are first-day numbers from a tracker, not audited figures from the producers. Sacnilk’s estimates can be revised, and distributors sometimes publish different totals. Whether the film holds up over its first weekend will show how much of the opening came from advance demand and fan turnout.
For now, the picture from the early reporting is consistent. A franchise sequel with its original star and director has started larger than the first film, with Tamil and Telugu audiences driving most of the domestic total.
